Democrats Presidential Candidate MP for Hulhudhoo Constituency Ilyas Labeeb says if elected he would bring changes to the fishermen's loan scheme and allow fishermen to take loans directly from the bank.
Speaking at a campaign rally, Ilyas said that put forth his name for the Presidency to help bring the changes wanted by the people as well as ease their worries and help them find ways toward individual riches.
In his speech, Ilyas mainly touched on the fisheries industry and the agriculture sector.
Ilyas noted that fishermen have to pay an amount higher than MVR 30,000 to the vessel owner on a monthly basis. He said that this causes fishermen to leave their trade and find another job while vessel owners are forced to sell their vessels as they are unable to pay off the loans.
The MP said that this shows how much the administration has neglected the industry and said that the government has destroyed the lives of fishermen.
Ilyas under the government of Democrats, would restructure fishermen's loan schemes which would allow fishermen to take loans directly from the bank.
He added that a democratic government would allow fishermen to take of their families from the income they earn by selling the fish they catch.
