PNC Presidential Candidate Male City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu promises to change the school holidays back to December to avert the issues making the school holidays fall in the middle of the year.
Muizzu made the comments while speaking at the campaign rally held on the island of Dhaalu Kuda Huvadhoo last night.
The Mayor said that the change to the start and end of the academic year has now become a problem for the people and that he would resolve the issue.
He explained that the school holidays falling in the middle of the year meant that it coincides with the overlapping of the two monsoons in the Maldives and that means the changes to the weather do not allow students and their families to enjoy the holidays as much.
Muizzu further pointed out that the country's independence day falls inside the holidays (26th July) and that this means students taking part in the festivities are unable to enjoy the holidays as they have to attend practices during the school break.
He said that if he were elected, the academic year for 2025 would begin in January of the year and that students and their families can enjoy the holiday break in December. He added that there would be changes made to the curriculum in order to make this happen.
This year the new academic began on the 6th of August and would end in June of 2024.
