Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed condemns arresting individuals in relation to the election as well as arson attacks targeting political parties.
His condemnation came after Police arrested a member of the Democrats interim council for expressing his opposition against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during his trip to Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo. Also, the MDP Campaign hall in Gaafu Dhaalu Madaveli was set on fire earlier today ahead of President Solih's trip to the island.
In a tweet, Nasheed said that the member of the Democrats party was arrested in Kudahuvadhoo while he was expressing his views in his own home. He said that the Police were now acting outside the law and called on the police to free the democrats' member.
Nasheed also addressed the arson attack against the Madeveli MDP campaign hall saying that he condemned such acts and that places and properties must not be damaged.
Police said that the report of the arson attack came around 05:34 am this morning and that officers present at the scene and members of the public worked to extinguish the fire.
Police also said that they are currently investigating the incident and that no arrests have been yet.
The Police assurance came after Defense Minister Maria Ahmed Didi called on the police to launch an investigation into the arson attack on the MDP Hall.
The Defense Minister via Twitter said that the President's campaign office condemned the arson attack on the MDP Hall in Madaveli.
She called on all parties to refrain from violence and to let the democratic processes take place as per the Constitution.
