The Presidential Candidate of PNC Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu files his candidacy application after a tense day within the ranks of the opposition coalition.

The Mayor was accompanied by PNC President Abdul Raheem Abdullah along with his running mate for the Election MP Hussain Latheef. His candidacy form was accepted by President of the Elections Commission Fuwad Thufeeq.

Muizzu's submission came a day after political turmoil within the opposition PPM/PNC coalition after the Supreme Court ruled that PPM's Presidential Candidate and former President Abdullah Yameen is ineligible for the election as he had a discharged decreed debt. Yameen is currently serving an 11-year jail sentence for money laundering and bribery convictions.

After the ruling, Yameen then instructed the joint PPM/PNC senate to consider boycotting the Presidential elections. But the senate voted to forgo the boycott but it was then reported that the former President refused to accept the joint senate's decision.

Muizzu won the candidacy for PNC via a hastily arranged senate vote and narrowly defeated the MP for Maduvaree Constituency Adam Shareef Umar.

The Mayor said before that he hoped that Yameen would be able to compete in the elections but insisted that he would fulfill his legal responsibilities as the Presidential Candidate of PNC.

A total of four candidate have now filed their candidacy at the Commission including President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih from MDP, Colonel Retired Mohamed Nazim from MNP, Ilyas Labeeb from the Democrats and Mayor Muizzu from PNC. The Commssion has accepted the candidacy of the President and MNP Candidate Nazim and are working on verifying the other forms.
