The Presidential candidate of the newly formed Democrats MP for Hulhudhoo Constituency Ilyas Labeeb file his candidacy alongside his running mate former MD of STO Hussain Amr.

Confirmation that Amr would be Ilyas's running mate came hours before he filed his candidacy.

Amr stood at the MP's side as he handed over his candidacy to President of the Elections Commission Fuwad Thaufeeq.

MP Ilyas is the third candidate to file his candidacy today as MDP Candidate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and MNP Candidate Colonel Retired Mohamed Nazim filed theirs earlier today.

Under the law, the Commission is obligated to accept or reject the form within 48 hours after the submission but Vice President of the Commission Ismail Habeeb said before that in this election, the Commission members agreed to inform potential candidates within 24 hours of their submission.

The main opposition party PPM submitted its candidacy form last week but the Commission rejected the form as its candidate former President Abdullah Yameen remains in jail serving an 11-year jail sentence.

Though Yameen contested the decision at the Supreme Court, the country's top Court today ruled that Yameen cannot compete in the election.

Other candidates competing in the Election are expected to submit their candidacy today as the deadline for candidacy ends tomorrow.
