Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has urged the main opposition party PPM not to boycott the Presidential Election and join forces with his party the Democrats.
This comes as the joint senate of PPM and PNC debate on a directive by PPM leader and former President Abdullah Yameen about boycotting the elections following his defeat at the Supreme Court earlier today about his candidacy.
In a tweet, Nasheed said that boycotting the elections would make it easier for MDP candidate and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to win the elections.
Nasheed urged members of PPM to reconsider any decision to boycott the election. He then went on to invite the opposition to join the Democrats in their bid to defeat the current regime. He said that God willing they would be triumphant.
Earlier today, the 7-Judge bench of the Supreme Court ruled that Yameen cannot compete in the elections as he had an outstanding fine of USD 5 million that was part of his money laundering and bribery sentence.
The Supreme Court ruled that since six months given to Yameen has passed and since the State notified the former President of the deadline, the fine has now become undischarged decreed debt.
As per the Constitution, an individual who applies for Presidential Candidacy must not have an undischarged decreed debt.
