Local media reports say The Democrats are contemplating the appointment of Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Eva Abdullah as the running mate for the party Presidential Candidate MP for Hulhudhoo Constituency Ilyas Labeeb.
If the appointment is confirmed, MP Eva would be the country's first-ever female running mate and could go on to become the country's first-ever female Vice President.
But the party is yet to confirm the decision though a senior member of the party informed the media of the decision.
MP Eva is now considered a veteran parliamentarian having held the seat of Galolhu Uthuru Constituency for a 3rd term running. While she is currently the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, a no-confidence motion was submitted against her earlier this year following her decision to leave the ruling MDP and eventually form the Democrats.
Eva along with Ilyas and 11 other MPs left MDP to form the Democrats and were later joined by former MDP President and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
Ilyas was confirmed as the party's presidential candidate via the referendum taken on Friday after only he put forward his name for the party's Presidential Primary. He was selected with around 94 percent of the votes.
