Jumhooree Party and Maldives Reform Movement hold discussions on fielding a common candidate for the upcoming Presidential Elections.
The meeting was held at the JP Party center, Kunooz this afternoon with JP Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrahim and MRM Leader Faris Maumoon leading the talks.
Speaking after the meeting, Ameen said that while many politicians believe that the change the people want can only be brought by fielding a common opposition candidate, there is no reason why JP should oppose the idea.
Ameen said that all politicians must understand what the people want and start working towards achieving it.
In his comments, Ameen shrugged off criticism by many against JP for deciding to field their own candidate while the party remains a coalition party of the current MDP administration. He said that those who pointed the finger at JP do not understand the coalition agreement and that the agreement is to remain in a coalition with MDP until this election.
He went on to say that this does not hinder JP from forming the next government and invited those questioning the coalition agreement to check whether there still was a coalition or not.
He added that MDP backed away from the coalition agreement back in 2019 for the Parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile, MRM leader Faris Maumoon said today that he had not announced his candidacy for the September Elections. But he said that since the election has a legal timeline pertaining to it, the party was working on relevant tasks.
The son of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Faris said that work was underway to find a political formula that can form a better government than the one in power right now and would work with current coalition members or even without them.
