The Democrats says it would hold a referendum to choose the Presidential Candidate for the September election as only one member is contesting for the party primary

While the application for the primary was opened on the 20th of this month and closed yesterday, only one candidate put forth his name for the candidacy and that was the MP for Hulhudhoo Constituency Ilyas Labeeb.

According to the party charter, if only one candidate is contesting in the primary, the decision would be made via a referendum.

MP Ilyas must secure 10 percent of the votes to secure the party primary ticket for himself. The referendum would be held on the 28th of this month.

Speaking to reporters after submitting his application form, MP Ilyas said that he would follow the party's vision and mission and would continue to work towards achieving the purpose of forming the new party.

He added that the party would need support from the people to defeat the current administration and win the election.
