The Parliament breaks for recess at the end of the second term of the year ahead of the Eid Al-Adha Holidays despite a proposal by the majority party MDP calling for an extension of the term.

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Chaired today's session after the legislative house went two days without holding any session and the change to parliamentary composition was on the agenda.

The second term for the year concludes at the end of this month but since the rest of the month has been declared as public holidays due to Eid Al-Adha, Speaker Nasheed said that today's session was the last session for the second term and that the Parliament would break for its second recess of the year.

This prompted MDP PG leader, MP Mohamed Aslam to express concern that the matter of the parliamentary committee composition was not resolved as it was not put to a vote.

He asked the Speaker to put the matter to a vote and to hold an additional session before the parliament broke for recess.

He went on to propose extending the parliamentary term till the important legislative works are completed. While some parliamentarians supported MP Aslam's proposal, none of the concerns were taken into consideration and the parliament was adjourned for the term.
