MP for Hithadhoo Medhu Constituency Ahmed Rasheed also resigns from Maldives Democratic Party MDP.

His resignation follows an announcement by the President of the Party Mohamed Nasheed who also resigned from the party today.

MP Rasheed said in a letter addressed to the Chairperson of MDP that he had decided to leave the party today.

The MP posted a copy of his resignation letter on Twitter several minutes after Nasheed posted his letter on the Social Media platform.

MP Rasheed is one of the five MDP MPs who refused to sign the no-confidence motion submitted against Nasheed, who is also the Speaker of the Parliament.

The other four MPs include MP for Inguraidhoo Constituency Ahmed Hassan, MP for Kulhudhufushi Dhekunu Constituency Jamsheed Mohamed, MP for Bilehdhoo Constituency Ahmed Haleem, and MP for Fonadhoo Constituency Moosa Siraj.

Nasheed leaves MDP 20 years after helping co-found it in exile in Sri Lanka. In his letter, Nasheed said that it is not the best decision to stay on with the party under the current situation in the country.
