The faction of the ruling MDP that supports the party's President Mohamed Nasheed has submitted its application form to the Elections Commission to register the breakaway political party.
It has been revealed that the party would be called 'The Democrats.
Members of the breakaway faction gathered at the Elections Commission to submit the application form but Nasheed was absent as he still remains the President of MDP.
It has been reported that Nasheed is scheduled to travel to Haa Alifu Dhidhoo today to take part in a ceremony to be held later today.
But former MDP leaders like its former Chairperson Hassan Latheef, Vice Speaker of the Parliament Eva Abdullah, and MP Imthiyaz Fahmy were all present at the Commission to submit the application form.
Even though forming the new party Nasheed's idea, Hassan Latheef signed the application form as under Elections Commission rules, an existing member of a party cannot sign to form or join another political party.
The Democrats remain coy about when Nasheed would join the newly established party and asked the reporters present at the application form submission to pose the question Nasheed himself.
