The Sri Lankan High Court has sentenced a Maldivian to 7 years in jail for smuggling drugs into the country.

Lankan media reported that the sentence was given to a Maldivian man named Zidhane Ibrahim. They said that he was arrested back in 2018 and was charged with smuggling and selling banned narcotics in the island nation.

It was also reported that he was arrested in an anti-narcotics operation carried out by Lankan Special Taskforce on Organized crime Division and he was apprehended from Nedhimala of Dehiwala district.

Dehiwala District is a popular destination among Maldivians as many Maldivian immigrants live there and many who visit also stay in the area.

Maldivians have been arrested over drug smuggling in Sri Lanka before and last year a Maldivian was given a life sentence for drug smuggling.

The suspect was arrested back in 2016 for smuggling just 265g of heroine.
