Maldives Democratic Party MDP has congratulated President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Attorney General's office after the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITOLS) decided in favor of the Maldives in its dispute with Mauritius over the Chagos region.
Yesterday, the ITLOS supported the Maldives’ stance while concluding the dispute between the Maldives and Mauritius on the overlapping maritime boundary issue.
The verdict favored the Maldives in its claim, according to 47232 sq kilometers - the larger portion of the overlapping area- to the Maldives.
In its statement, MDP said that while the ITOLS heard the case, the government of the Maldives had defended the interests of the Maldivian people at the tribunal.
MDP hailed the Tribunal's decision as it makes the Maldives a complete nation that is fully demarcated and that this is a major success for the Maldivian people.
It further said that while the government was working tirelessly to defend Maldivian interests, the opposition was working to spread lies that are baseless and not backed by historical facts.
While MDP welcomed the decision, MDP President and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed seemed unhappy with the tribunal's decision.
In a Tweet, he said that once the Maldives ceased its claim over the Chagos region it has lost part of its EEZ and that Maldives should not accept this decision.
