Newly elected MP for Guraidhoo Constituency Ibrahim Shaaz has taken his oath of office today.
The oath was administered by Supreme Court Judge Aisha Shujune at a special ceremony held at the Majlis today. After taking the oath of office, MP Shaaz joined the parliamentary session held today.
MP Shaaz secured the parliamentary seat for MDP after beating the brother of his predecessor in the by-election held on the 15th of this month.
Shaaz won 1,346 votes while PPM's Hussain Riza Adam received 1,222 votes. Riza is the brother of late Guriadhoo MP Ibrahim Riza who last his battle with cancer earlier this year.
Maldives National Party MNP also competed in the election but its candidate Ali Arif only received 122 votes.
Shaaz's win meant that MDP has now claimed a parliamentary seat PPM has held for the last 14 years.
