The Parliament's secretariat today cut off an MP during mid-debate after he made an insensitive comment about women living in the rural parts of the country.
Speaking during the resolution on restructuring state debt, MP for Komandoo Constituency Mohamed Raashid praised the government for the number of developmental projects the administration has completed during its tenure.
But his praising took a questionable turn when he said that the freshness has come back to the faces of beautiful women living on the islands because they now have access to clean water.
The MP continued that before no matter how expensive the rural women used, they always smelt bad because they bathed with unclean water.
At this point, the Speaker interrupted the MP by giving a chance to the MP for Hulhumeedhoo Constituency Ilyas Labeeb who got up and pointed out that the chamber would not accept such degradation of Maldivian women.
Speaker Mohamed Nasheed also said to the Komandoo MP that he would not accept belittling any gender while speaking in the chamber.
He then gave the next MP the chance to start debating on the resolution without letting MP Raashid continue.
The MP was heard protesting against this decision but his protests were cutt off after his mic was cut off too.
