President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent a letter to the coalition leaders appealing to them to work together with MDP to secure the Presidential Elections scheduled for later this year.
President addressed the letters to the three leaders of the 3 major parties who have formed a coalition government with MDP and invited them to compete with him in the election.
This comes after representatives of President Solih met with Gasim Ibrahim, the leader of the JP which has a massive support base in the Maldives, earlier this week.
But JP and Gasim have not come out and said whether or not the party will support President Solih. Other coalition parties like MRM and Adhaalath party also remain undecided over whether to support MDP as part of the coalition government or field their own candidate for the election.
MDP, the largest political party in the Maldives elected President Solih as their Presidential Candidate after a heated Primary in which he competed against the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
While MDP has officially recognized President Solih as its candidate, the party remains fragmented following Nasheed's unspoken decision not to stand with the President.
