The Opposition Coalition has condemned the parliament security for assigning female officers to escort opposition MPs during the scuffle in the parliamentary chambers last Monday when President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih delivered his presidential address.
During the session, some MPs staged a protest against the President in front of his podium and the parliament's security personnel was forced to physically escort the MPs out of the chambers. Initially, the security deployed two female officers who made futile attempts to escort the protesting MPs, and eventually Male security officers were seen yanking the MPs away from the chamber.
In a statement, the opposition said that assigning female security officers to forcibly remove male MPs is an attempt to tarnish the dignity and integrity of women and that it was done in a way that would make society mock women as the weaker gender.
The Opposition accused the parliament of making such an arrangement knowing that all the opposition MPs were male and said that it had inflicted shame on the female security officers too.
It further said that this goes against the virtues of Islam and the examples set by the religion.
The Opposition also noted that while the female security officers were humiliated in front of First Lady Fazna Ahmed, female cabinet Ministers, female MPs and other female political appointees and implied that they did not do anything stop the events.
It added that this proved that the administration did not really respect women and that it was willing to use women's rights in any way that is only beneficial to them.
