The Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice (OTJ) says it will begin closed hearings next month on alleged human rights violations, inhuman treatment, and torture in Maldives’ prisons that occurred from 01 January 1953 to 17 November 2018.
The OTJ said in an announcement that hearings will be held from February 26, 2023, to March 3, 2023. It said these hearings are held to take statements from prisoners in Maafushi Prison as well as Asseyri jail.
A total of 37 people have given their names for the hearings in Maafushi while 2 prisoners from Asseyri jail have also given their names. A total of 11 individuals have registered to give statements at the hearings to be held in Male'.
The Office also said that further hearings are scheduled to be held in Malé City and that a date for the Malé hearings will be announced later.
It added that information on the hearings will be made public through the OTJ’s website and social media platforms.
