MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail says party members cannot initiate a political movement within the party.

His comments referred to party President Mohamed Nasheed who has hinted at a separate political movement within MDP following his defeat to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the party primary held last Saturday.

Today, Nasheed spoke about the result in the MDP WhatsApp group and said that if the discrepancies that were committed in the primary were taken away, then President would have lost many votes.

Nasheed further said that President Solih would not be able to amass the votes to win the Presidential election.

He then went on to hint at a separate political movement within the party and spread it to all the branches of the party across the country. He added that it would decide who it would support in the Presidential elections later on.

Responding to these comments, Fayyaz said that another political movement cannot be allowed within the party without bringing changes to the party regulations.

Pointing out that the party's Presidential candidate is the one who wins the Primary election and that a movement that does not support President Solih cannot be allowed within the party.

Fayyaz appealed Nasheed to rethink any decision on the matter.
