Speaker of the Parliament and President of MDP Mohamed Nasheed has finally accepted his defeat in the party primary at the hands of current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih beat Nasheed by a margin of 8,941 votes. President Solih secured 61 percent of the total votes which amounts to 24,572 Speaker Nasheed received 39 percent of the total votes counted which amounts to 15,631.

Speculation mounted as Nasheed refused to accept defeat and remained silent for a day after his defeat in the party's first-ever competitive presidential primary.

But today, Nasheed spoke about the result in the MDP WhatsApp group and said that if the discrepancies that were committed in the primary were taken away, then President would have lost many votes.

Nasheed further said that President Solih would not be able to amass the votes to win the Presidential election.

He then went on to hint at a separate political movement within the party and spread it to all the branches of the party across the country. He added that it would decide who it would support in the Presidential elections later on.

The Speaker noted that it would be easier for him to support any candidate who is open to changing the governing system. President Solih appears not to support the idea of changing the system.
