President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has won the MDP Primary election held today by securing a landslide victory over party President and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
The latest elections result from MDP show that the President has won 61 percent of the votes and this amounts to 24,384 ballots. While his rival Nasheed has won 15,487 votes which amount to 39 percent of the vote.
MPD also said that 243 out of the 244 ballot boxes have now been counted.
This win means President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is now on track to secure his second tenure as President as he would now be the MDP Presidential candidate for the election scheduled for September of this year.
The gapping win for the President came as Nasheed's camp claimed a victory for the former President based on exit polls. But while Nasheed's team claimed that he had won 64.7 percent based on exit polls, the President's team had also said that he won 67 percent based on exit polls.
The first ever competitive primary of the largest political party was marred with claims of voter fraud and violence as three people from two islands were arrested for smashing up ballot boxes.
