The Criminal Court has sentenced a man to forty years in jail for raping a girl as well as for creating child pornographic material.
The Defendant, Mohamed Shazleef of Mercury Light, of Laamu Kalaidhoo was convicted of the crime he committed on farmlands in Kalaidhoo on the 6th of January 2018.
The Prosecutor General's Office said that the Court convicted the Defendant yesterday and that it had also issued a sentence against the Defendant.
The minor involved in the case was 17 years of age.
The charges against the Defendant said that he had taken the child to the site of the crime and raped the girl. The charges also said that Defendant had then taken pictures and videos of the child without clothes.
Since the Defendant was found guilty of the rape charge, he was given a sentence of 20 years in jail under Article 14 of the Sexual Crimes Act. The defendant was given another 20 years for creating pornographic material which displays a child's sexual organs.
This is a crime under the Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Abuse Offenders Act and the sentence was issued under Article 18 of the law.
The Prosecutor General's Office said that 2 years and 14 months would cut from the Defendant's 40 year jail sentence as time served.
