Police say they are reviewing the sentence given against former President Abdullah Yameen by the Criminal Court on Sunday and that they would begin a criminal investigation if it is needed.
The Criminal Court convicted Yameen of money laundering and accepting bribes and sentenced him to 11 years in jail over the sale of Vaavu Aaarah. The Court also found Yoosuf Naeem, who is Yameen's co-defendant, guilty of giving bribes and sentence him to 3 years in jail.
While the Court had yesterday published the details of the sentencing, the documents say that Deputy Mayor of Male' City Ahmed Nareesh had perjured himself while giving testimony in defense of Yameen.
When asked if the Police were investigating this perjury along with the perjury committed by a man named Abdullah Rasheed, Police said that they were reviewing the sentence details and that they would launch a criminal investigation if there is a lawful need for one.
In the sentence, the Court states that the testimonies given by the Deputy Mayor and Abdullah Rasheed were believed to be untrue.
They both testified saying that upon the instruction of the former President they had hand-counted MVR 15 million and taken into Yoosuf Naeem aboard a car.
