Police have confirmed that the Deputy Minister at the Transport Ministry Shimaz Ali was attacked last night.
Police said that the report of the attack was filed at the Police last night and that they were investigating the matter. They have not arrested any suspect in relation to the attack.
Transport Minister Aishath Nahula condemned the attack against her Deputy Minister who is being investigated for corruption. Minister Nahula further said that while the allegations are being investigated, some are trying to influence the probe and dragging the Minister's family into it. She said that this was just to tarnish her reputation and that she would not deter from stopping corruption at any cost.
Deputy Minister Shimaz, who belongs to Maldives Reform Movement MRM, was attacked in Male' last night and MRM has called on authorities to find those responsible.
The Anti-Corruption Commission ACC has asked the Prosecutor General's Office to charge 6 people including the Deputy Minister over awarding the contract of creating Minister-sanctioned license plates to a local company named 'Vasagio'.
While Shimaz acted as the Chairman of the bid Committee, he was accused of meeting with the company during the bidding stage.
