Assistant Commissioner Ali Shujau says scammers are using last night's fire incident in Male' to steal money from online users and that the public must be aware of such scams.

A total of 10 people lost their lives in one of the most devastating fire incidents the country had seen in recent times with two congested labor quarters totally burnt in the fire.

Speaking at a news conference, Assistant Commissioner Shujau said that scammers are sending links to videos of the fire to online users and that they are using these links to steal money from users.

He said that the links being circulated are with descriptions of how the fire incident had occurred and how it had spread.

The Assistant Commissioner added that police were investigating these links.

The fire ignited around midnight and it took MNDF hours to get it under control. Authorities said that the victims of the fire were burnt beyond recognition with officials finding it difficult to differentiate their gender.
