Health Minister Ahmed Naseem says mental health issues were brought forward into the limelight by this administration and just recently.

He said this while answering questions posed by the MP for Maafanu Medhu Constituency Ibrahim Rasheed at the parliament session today.

Minister Naseem that the Health Ministry itself is aware of the rise in mental health issues in the Maldives and that the Ministry has a designated department to resolve the issue.

He said that the department is taking measures to mitigate such issues and that the matter of mental health had come into the limelight just recently.

The Minister noted that these issues should be resolved and that they can only be resolved by creating awareness among the government and the public.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital has a designated mental health department while Hulhumale' hospital opened its own department this year.

But many patients are still on the waiting list, some for more than 1 year seeking treatment for serious mental health issues like clinical depression and other alignments.
