Judicial authorities have begun the discussion on reviewing how the Judicial Service Commission is composed to bring the necessary amendments to the Constitution.

This comes after the Attorney General's office said last week that it would meet with JSC as well as other relevant authorities before compiling the bill that would enable the appropriate changes to the Constitution on the composition of the Commission.

It had also said that the bill would make sure that the Commission is free of influence and is created as per the international guidelines and standards.

In a tweet today, the Attorney General's Office said that the discussion on revising the composition began today and that the Attorney General's Office has met with both JSC and the Supreme Court.

These discussions kicked off after a bill on revising the composition of JSC had been thrown out of the Parliament on three occasions. The bills were submitted by the MP for Mahibadhoo Constituency Ahmed Thoriq who is from the opposition coalition.

How JSC is formed

  • Three judges are elected from the Supreme Court, High Court, and Lower cours
  • One lawyer is elected from among his/her peers
  • Attorney General
  • Speaker of the Parliament
  • One MP from the sitting parliament
  • One member of the public
  • One member appointed by the President

Changing how the JSC is formed now and freeing it from political influence is a presidential pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
