President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says in order to bring the best in the Councils, they should be made more productive than now.
The President made the comments while speaking at the 3rd session of the 'Viavathi Raaje Conference' currently being held in Laamu Atoll Gan.
Speaking about financially empowering the Councils, President Solih said that highlighting this at the 'Viavathi Raajje Conference' was to have a discussion with the Councils and the WDCs to find ways to increase revenue for Councils and how to make the residents of the islands earn more through the council.
President Solih said that the most important purpose of bringing the amendment to the Decentralization system was to make the councils financial empowered and make them productive enough to operate on their own.
He noted that the Councils has been able to increase the budgets and grants issued to them from year on year but much remains to be achieved.
The President said that more needed to be done to make the councils and WDCs more efficient and in turn more productive.
