Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer says the government has no plans to hold discussions with the countries to seek respite from the debts the country has taken from these countries.

Ameer made the statement while answering a question posed by the MP for Kulhudhufushi Uthuru Constituency Yaasir Abdul at the parliament today.

MP Yasir asked if the government planned to have discussions with the countries that have loaned funds to the Maldives about paying back the debt.

In response, Minister Ameer said that the government was implementing austerity measures to mitigate world economic conditions.

Noting that the Maldives has always been a country that maintains its debt obligations, Minister Ameer said there was never a time that the country could not make debt payments. He noted that he could not see a future in which the Maldives would default on its debt.

Recently, the government revealed that it still had to pay back USD 94.35 million as debt to different countries and these are monthly payments due by the end of the year.
