Foreign Ministry says Maldivians living in Pakistan are safe as the country faces devastating floods due to heavy rains over the last few weeks.

At least 1,136 people have been killed since June and roads, crops, homes and bridges washed away across the country.

Officials estimate that more than 33 million Pakistanis - one in seven people - have been affected by the flooding. The situation is most severe in provinces like Sindh and Balochistan but mountainous regions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have also been badly hit.

Updating the local media on the situation, Communications Strategist at the Foreign Ministry Safaath Ahmed said that it had instructed Maldivians living in Pakistan to register at the Maldivian High Commission in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.

She said that as of now 67 Maldivians are registered at the High Commission of Maldives in Islamabad.

Safaath noted that most Maldivians reside in Lahore or Karachi. She said that the High Commission is in touch with the registered Maldivians and all are reported safe.

She added that the High Commission is closely monitoring the situation.
