Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Ahmed Nazim, resigned from his post hours before a parliamentary session to debate on a motion to remove him.
In a statement detailing the reason for his resignation, Nazim strongly denied all the allegations against him. The ruling PNC members filed a no-confidence motion against him on charges of abuse of office and encouraging the interests of parliament.
Nazim denied the allegations and said he had not presented any evidence to prove them. He said he had not done anything against the rules of the House, whether as the Deputy Speaker or as a member, and had discharged his duties honestly and faithfully.
Nazim added that he has always tried to establish equality among all members. He said he had not done anything against the law or rules, had not followed any particular political ideology, and had worked impartially to protect the rights and privileges of his members.
The petition was signed by all the members of the PNC parliamentary group. Highlighting this, Nazim said that the most democratic and civilized way to move forward was to resign from the post as the MPs who elected him now want him removed.
Nazim, who is the MP for Dhiggaru constitunency, assured that he would continue to serve his constituents.
