MP for Eydhafushi Constituency Ahmed Saleem (RedWave Salim) has been elected as the Vice-President of the Parliament. Saleem was elected to the post by a large majority of the House members in a secret ballot held today.
Saleem received backing from 62 MPs, while MP Hussain Ziyad from MDP, who competed against him, received 10 votes. Two votes in the ballot were deemed invalid.
Ahmed Salim has been an experienced member of parliament for many years.
After the election of a member for the post of Vice-President of the Parliament, the session was adjourned as there was no further business on the agenda.
The post of the Deputy Speaker became vacant after the former Deputy MP, Ahmed Nazim, resigned hours before a parliamentary session that would have seen him removed from the post following a no-confidence motion submitted against him.
