Veteran local actress Fauziyya Hassan has passed away at the age of

Sources have said that she died due to a heart attack. She died in Sri Lanka as the actress has been living in the country for some time now.

Fauziya acted in multiple films and series in a career spanning years in the Maldivian film industry.

Some of her works include 'Haddhu', 'Vaa Loabi Engey nama', 'Dhin veynuge hithaamaiga', 'Dhon Kamana', 'Loibahtakaa', and 'Yoosuf'.

Her last appearance was in the film 'Faree' which was streamed on Baiskof, the streaming site last year.

Fauziya had a colorful history as she was arrested and jailed in India for espionage.

She was arrested in the Indian state of Kerala back in 1994 along with fellow Maldivian Mariyam Rasheed after they were accused of gathering intelligence information from an Indian scientist Nambi Naryan of the Indian Space and Research Organization ISRO.

The Maldivian duo was further accused of passing on the collected state secrets to the Maldivian government who had then passed on the information to the Pakistani government.

While the Indian scientist was also arrested, all three were kept under custody and tortured.

The three were free 2 years later after India's Central Bureau of Investigation concluded that the charges against the three were fabricated by the Police in Kerala.
