Maldivian Ambassador to Japan and recent recipient of the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (O.D.R.I.) Hassan Sobir passed away earlier today.

Sobir passed away at the Treetop hospital after losing his battle with cancer. The decorated career diplomat was conferred the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (O.D.R.I.) during the official reception held to mark this year’s Independence Day.

His decades-long service to the nation was marked by ambitious contributions across various sectors of the economy, particularly tourism, fisheries, and agriculture. He also played a pivotal role in shaping and executing development projects, in addition to his distinguished career in the foreign service.

He began his public service on 7 February 1973. At the time of his passing, Sobir was serving as the Ambassador of the Maldives to Japan under the administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

The President has decided to hoist the national flag at half mast for the next three days as the nation mourns for it profound loss.

Late Hassan Sobir was buried after Asr prayers after the deceased was given a state funeral.
