National Disaster Management Authority NDMA says 261 houses in 9 islands had sustained damages and notified the authority during the wave surges that occurred across the country earlier this month due to bad weather.

It said that up until the 23rd of this month, the authority had received around 261 damage assessment forms from 9 islands.

In a further breakdown, NDMA said that these include forms for 8 houses of Maradhoo in Addu City, 20 houses in Maradhoofeydhoo of Addu City, 2 houses in Shaviyani Atoll Bilehfahi, 8 houses in Gaafu Dhaalu Rathfandhoo, 61 houses in Thaa Thimarafushi, 67 houses in Gaafu Dhaalu Madaveli, 2 houses in Haa Dhaalu Vaikaradhoo, 11 houses in Gaafu Dhaalu Fiyoree, and 82 houses in Gaafu Dhaalu Hoadehdhoo.

Storm surges rushing on an island

NDMA said that the forms indicate that 96 houses in 9 islands have sustained considerable damages to the living conditions of the houses and that this is 40 percent of the forms submitted.

It also said that farmers had suffered the most during the natural disaster and that 110 farms had sustained damage during the spell of bad weather and wave surges.

NDMA said that farmlands in Madaveli, Fiyoree, Hoadehdhoo, and Thimarafushi had sustained damages.

It said that some of the items grown for income purposes such as peppers, papayas, betel leaves, banana, breadfruit, and mango trees were destroyed.

NDMA assured that it was working to provide aid and relief to those affected by the incidents.
