Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer says although the government is taking stimulus measures to stabilize the economy, it has no plans to slash the salaries of government employees.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference held by the Ministry, Ameer said that economic reinforcement measures taken this year would decrease spending by 6 percent of the GDP.

He further said that the government had successfully cut down on 22 percent of recurrent expenditures this year.

Minister Ameer also said that though the government is taking necessary measures, it has no plans to slash the salaries of government employees.

He pointed out that the country's economy is growing faster than previous estimates and that the Maldives is currently among the fastest-growing economies in the world.

Despite the Minister's reassurance, the government is currently holding talks on increasing the goods and services tax to further ease economic difficulties in the country.
