It said that the yellow alert had been issued from Haa Alifu Atoll to Thaa Atoll and that the alert is expected to last from 10:00 am to 02:00 pm.
The Met Office said that heavy rain, strong winds of 25-30 mph and gusts of 50 mph with rough seas are expected in the area.
It had also issued a white alert from Laamu Atoll to Addu City between 10:15 am and 04:00 pm. It said that heavy rain and thunderstorms, strong winds of 22-27 mph with gusts of 45 mph, and rough seas were expected in the area.
The Met Office had warned on Thursday of the bad weather expected in the country over the weekend.
Yesterday tidal surges caused by severe weather affected large parts of the country. The islands include Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Madaveli and Addu City.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) earlier reported that storm surges had affected 22 islands across seven atolls. The NDMA is working on assisting the affected islands.
