Vice Speaker of the Parliament Eva Abdullah has requested the parliament to summon Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer to question him about the state reserves.
In her request to the parliament, MP Eva, who represents Galolhu Uthuru constituency in parliament, at the beginning of June only USD 317 million from the foreign currency reserve were available to the government.
She also mentioned that the government is obliged to pay back USD 130 million in debt in June and next month.
MP Eva further said that for these two months, the estimated budget deficit is more than USD 150 million and had said that she will question the Finance Minister on the number of funds that would be left in state reserves at the end of July.
The MP's request follows comments made by the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed in which he said that state reserves would fall to dangerous levels next month.
But the government had been quick to stem such talk with Finance Minister Ameer tweeting to say that the increasing dollar income would cover the debt payments and that the state reserve would stabilize at the end of the year.
