MP for Kaashidhoo Constituency Abdullah Jabir has submitted an emergency motion against the anti-India rally organized by the opposition for the weekend.
The rally is part of the opposition's IndiaOut activities calling for the withdrawal of Indian troops stationed in the Maldives.
Speaking after submitting the emergency motion today, MP Jabir said that the opposition's anti-India activities behind the cloak of the right to assemble and freedom of speech could damage the relationship between the Maldives and India.
He further said the anti-India activities might incite violence and might lead to the point where citizens of each nation may attack one another.
MP Jabir added that cautionary steps must be taken before the situation worsens.
The motion was accepted for debate with votes from 30 out of 38 MPs present at the session today.
Two MPs voted against the motion.
This comes after earlier this week, Home Minister Imran Abdullah said that the opposition's rally planned in Male' would not be allowed held on Friday.
He further said that the government had already informed the opposition of its decision but the opposition denied any communication about the planned activity between the two parties.
