Maldives National Defense Force MNDF has launched its Special Operations Group for its Marine Corp today.
The Defense Ministry said that the Special Operations Group (SOG) was formed as a special unit under MNDF Marine Corps, as part of a series of reforms being brought to MNDF’s operational structure, for combatting terrorism and Direct Action operations.
The SOG will work in tandem with MNDF Special Forces.
It was launched upon the completion of MNDF’s Marine Corps Special Operations Group (SOG) Qualification Course in Girifushi today as Defense Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi was on hand as the chief guest of the closing ceremony.
Addressing the ceremony, the Minister highlighted that, since time immemorial, Maldivians have been a peace-loving people, who have pursued their own best interests, through the spirit of friendly cooperation and harmony with all nations of the world.
Minister Mariya noted that the quintessential peace-loving and cooperative nature of Maldivians is the secret behind the preservation of Maldivian independence, sovereignty, security, and stability over the years, and is the basis for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s Policy of International Defence Diplomacy and Cooperation.
Addressing the participants of the course, Minister Mariya said the Tab on their shoulders, the Badge on their chests, and the Berets on their heads signify the gravity of the duties and responsibilities that they bear on their shoulders, chests, and heads.
Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal hailed today as a historic day. He said via Twitter this elite unit of marines, who underwent rigorous special ops training, will add to the capability of MNDF by extending its reach and delivering multi-domain options for the Marine Corps.
