Authorities in the Maldives are transferring high-risk inmates in jails to their homes amid a new wave of COVID infections in the country.

Maldives Correctional Services said that it had already started to transfer some of the high-risk inmates due to the current increase in cases.

It also said that it was working to transfer more inmates to their homes for the time being.

It, however, refrained from revealing how many inmates had been transferred home due to the new restrictions.

This has become common practice during the pandemic as whenever the number of cases increases in the country, high-risk inmates are transferred to their homes as a caution.

Correctional Services has said before that a total of 78 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 from the Maafushi jail in the new wave.

It said that this includes 66 inmates and 12 officers.

The Services added that 215 inmates and officers had been placed under quarantine due to the positive cases.
