Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof says if Civil Servants do not hinder government work and provide services to the public without any prejudice, they should be allowed to involve themselves in political activities.
He made these comments after the Civil Servants Commission gazetted a new amendment to the Civil Servant's Regulation that allows government organizations to fire their staff if they are found to be involved in political activities even after office hours.
The Minister said in a tweet that Civil Servants should be given the freedom to take part in political activities if they do not obstruct government work and offer fair service to the public.
Mahloof went on to say that his ministry is a host to staff with different political views but said the speed of their work is efficient.
Meanwhile, MP for Villimale Constituency and deputy leader of the newly formed Maldives National Party MNP Ahmed Usham said this change was approved back in 2015.
Sharing a picture of article 53 of the Civil Service Act, MP Usham said that civil servants were prohibited from taking part in political activities even after office hours in the 3rd amendment brought to the act back in 2015.
He said that the newly revised regulation was brought about by the amendment enacted in 2015.
