The proposed state budget for 2022 shows that the government has allocated MVR 4.06 billion to the education sector.
This is MVR 1.14 billion more than that was allocated for the sector in the current state budget which was initially at MVR 3.9 billion.
The Proposed Budget has set aside MVR 2.27 billion to pay the salaries of the staff working in state-run schools across the country.
Meanwhile, the government had allocated MVR 208 million for scholarships and other training programs. It has also set aside MVR 159 million for its successful First-Degree free program.
The budget states that MVR 240 million has been allocated for the national student loan scheme while MVR 170 million has been reserved to help students in other matters.
With the proposed budget, the government is also looking to revive its 'Breakfast Program' for school students after setting aside MVR 135 million for the program.
The program was abandoned last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As for infrastructure, the government is planning to build 2 states of the art TVET facilities in two islands while it has also allocated MVR 29 million for the new school being built in Hulhumale'.
Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer submitted the budget to the parliament yesterday and the parliament is set to deliberate on the budget later this month.
