Environmentalal Protection Agency EPA says an illegally captured flamingo bird has been seized from Haa Alifu Baarah and brought under the protection of the Police.

News of a flock of Flamingos who have found a temporary home at the mangroves in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhufushi has captured the attention of the nation and some individuals with ill intentions have captured and sold the migratory birds.

The EPA confirmed today via Twitter that it had seized one such illegally captured bird from a man in Baarah.

EPA said that unfortunately the flamingo was found with clipped wings, and is no longer able to fly away and continue the migratory journey with the rest of the flock.

The Agency said that arrangements are being made to rehabilitate the flamingo in Lh. Maakoa mangroves, a Protected Area currently under the administration of the Ministry of Defense.

It said that a veterinary doctor from the local NGO Atoll Volunteers will be providing medical checkups to ensure that the bird stays healthy.

EPA thanked the Police for their continued support and quick action.

It also urged the public to put an end to the practice of capturing migratory birds that will continue to grace this island nation in the coming days.

EPA had promised harsh action against those who capture, sell, and buy the migratory birds
