A power outage in some parts of the capital Male' has caused some elevators in the city to shut down and trap people inside.

State Electric Company Stelco said in a tweet that the power outage was due to a technical issue and that the issue has now been rectified. The company also said that it has now restored power to those sites in both Male' and Hulhumale'.

Reports have said that the power outage began around 12:00 pm and that it affected Hulhumale', Maafanu ward, and Galolhu ward of Male'.

Maldives National Defense Force MNDF had said that elevators had shut down in four buildings due to the power outage.

It said that 3 elevators were opened fairly quickly and that it was working to open the elevator of the fourth building.

MNDF had said that this elevator was located on the Male' Grand building in the center of the city.

The other buildings that reported lift problems are the building that formerly housed Aaliya School, Velaanage office Complex, and the building that houses national airline Maldivian.
