President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has proposed appointing Abdulh Ghanee Mohamed as the new Chief Justice and has submitted his recommendation to the Parliament.
In his letter to the parliament, President Muizzu said that the JSC has recommended the appointment of Abdul Ghani as the Chief Justice. He requested the Parliament to follow its procedures and make a decision on his recommendation.
At the parliament session today, Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdullah read out the name and announced that the President's recommendation has been sent forward to the Parliament's Judiciary Committee for further deliberation.
Former Chief Judge of the High Court, Shujau Usman, and the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Abdullah Mohamed, have also applied for the vacant post of Chief Justice.
Judge Ghani received a 'Highly Recommended' from the JSC after their interviews with all three applicants, and this was the reason why the President proposed his name.
He worked in the judiciary for many years and was a civil court judge, then Chief Justice of the High Court, and later a Supreme Court judge. Gani was also the former JSC chairman.
The post of Chief Justice became vacant after the retirement of former Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan last month. Therefore, the administration of the Supreme Court has been temporarily handed over to Justice Abdullah Hameed.
