A tourist traveling aboard a safari has died after the vessel sank off Thilafushi earlier today.

Maldives National Defence Force MNDF had said earlier that it had responded to a distress call from a safari named 'Handy Cruiser' traveling west of Kaafu Atoll Thilafushi.

MNDF had said that the distress call came around 08:39 am today after the vessel had started to take on water due to bad weather conditions.

MNDF had also said that 17 people were aboard the vessel and that the vessel had later sunk due to worsening weather.

Reports have said that 7 people were rushed to the IGMH after the incident and that one person had died due to the accident.

It has also been reported that the person who died is a tourist and that 6 others are currently under treatment at the hospital.

Their condition is currently unclear.

The country is experiencing worsening weather conditions for the most part with high winds and rough seas expected.

Authorities have warned seafarers to take all necessary safety precautions when traveling and to make sure all safety and communication equipment are functional before setting off on their travels.
