Maldives Meteorological Services MET Office has issued a yellow alert for major parts of the country as weather across the country worsens.
MET Office had said that the yellow alert is issued from 07:30 am to 11:30 am today and that the alert is issued from Haa Alifu Atoll to Laamu Atoll.
It said that torrential rain and strong winds of 25-30 miles per hour are expected as well as gusts of 50 miles per hour with rough seas and wave surges expected.
Speaking to "The Press", the MET Office had said that a typhoon was forming in the Bay of Bengal area but that it was forming very far from the Maldives.
MET Office asserted that the current weather in the Maldives and the storm system in the Bay of Bengal are not related and that the current weather conditions in the island nation are related to the Hulhangu Moosun or South-west moosun.
However, the MET Office said that seas are expected to be rough during bad weather and that seafarers must abide by the safety guidelines given by the authorities.
