Housing Development Corporation has decided to change the voice-activated light currently installed on the corridors of the Hiya Flats built on Phase II of Hulhumale'.

All 16 towers have these corridor lights which only switch once a loud sound is made near the lights.

If the surrounding is silent, then the whole flat areas are dark and this has prompted some complaints from flat owners preparing to move to their housing units.

HDC had said that it has decided to change the light fittings and that this work would begin next week.

The Corporation also said that once the new lights are installed, the towers would be lit from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.

The decision on the voice-activated lights follows after several incidents of theft and burglary at the newly built Hiya Flats.

Many had said that their properties have been stolen from the flats as the area does not have any security and as there are no CCTV cameras installed at the Hiya Towers yet.
